Kayla's Make-A-Wish was a trip to Hawaii in 2008
These are just some of the many photographs that we took when we were in Hawaii. We were primarily on the island of Oahu. We didn't venture to any of the other islands. We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, a wonderful resort in Waikiki. Some of our favorite places we visited were Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Sea Life Park, the Dole Plantation and Turtle Bay. We have a lot more pictures than what you see here. With some time and some more space, those pictures will be coming soon.
We were picked up at our house in a limosuine. It was really cool that we didn't have to literally drive to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.
Kayla, Katie, Trish and Louis at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. We had to change planes for our flight to Honolulu.
Arrival at Honolulu. Great Airport. Excellent weather. We arrived at 2:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. Central Time)
The leis came from the Make-A-Wish welcoming party who helped us get through the airport to claim our luggage and find our rental car.
Kayla on the lanei of the hotel room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We were in the Tapa Tower, the largest building in the resort.
Penguins at the Hilton. It is the only place in the 50 states where this type of African penguin can be raised.
Kayla and Katie on board the U.S.S. Bowfin, a Baleo class submarine from World War II at Pearl Harbor. This is part of a submarine museum that is one of the many historic sites in Pearl Harbor and on Ford Island.
Inside the U.S.S. Bowfin where Louis is listening to a history of the sub while walking through the vessel.
Looking from the Bowfin is the Arizona Memorial on the right; above the memorial is the air traffic tower on Ford Island and to the left is the bow of the U.S.S. Missouri.
Trish and Louis at the entrance to the U.S.S. Missouri. We had to take a bus to go across a bridge to Ford Island, still an active Navy base.
The drips of oil coming from the crankcases of the U.S.S. Arizona. It is a memorial to those who served and perished in the Attack of Pearl Harbor, when the U.S. entered the Second World War.
Diamond Head from the Pacific Ocean (on board the boat taking us to and from the Atlantis submarine)
Katie on the boat ride to the Atlantis submarine, where they gave us a tour of the artificial reefs one mile off of Waikiki. Many fish are down there. But the water was so murky that photography was impossible.
One of the many beaches on the island of Oahu. This has many reefs where snorkelers will go to explore.
Kayla and Katie on the beach at Hanauma Bay. Right after this picture was taken, they got soaked by the waves. Soon after that, a lifeguard posted a dangerous tide warning as the waves were getting bigger and bigger. There were many swimmers, surfers and snorkelers out there at the time.
